IXL Math Focus of the Week: S - Units of Measurement
Chapter 11: Measurement
Monday, April 13th1) Watch video "Measuring Length in Centimeters" to see how to use a centimeter ruler to measure. 2) Gather the household items on the list that you used last week (see lists to the right) and the measurement paper you used to record measurements in inches. 3) Measure each household object and record its length to the closest centimeter. 4) For the larger items on the 2nd list, decide which tool (centimeter ruler or meterstick) is best to use. Then measure and record lengths to the closest centimeter or meter. 5) Ask an adult or older student to check your measurements. 6) Complete Math Packet pages 26-27 & 30-31. (Sent home on March 13th) |

Tuesday, April 14th1) Watch video "Comparing & Measuring Lengths"
2) Using some of the objects used yesterday (4-5 at a time), place them in order from shortest to longest. Repeat this with several groups of items. 3) Choose 2 items to compare. Measure both items using the same units (centimeters or meters). Make a statement comparing the 2 items. (ex: The spoon is 3 centimeters shorter than the butter knife.) Repeat this activity with several pairs of items. |

SOMETHING FUN TO DO:
Make a Measurement Monster (Or use the one you made last week) Use construction paper scraps (or just draw with crayons/markers) to create a monster. See examples below. Then use a ruler to measure in centimeters: -the height of the monster -the width of the monster -the length of the monster's leg -the length of the monster's foot -the height of the monster's eye -the width of the monster's mouth Keep your monster to use on a project next week. If you didn't last week, take a picture of your monster and send it to your teacher. |
Wednesday, April 15th1) Remember: 100 centimeters = 1 meter
2) Use larger items from lists. Measure items in 2 units (centimeters and meters). 3) Use logical reasoning to solve word problems to the right. If you haven't yet, get out your
Measurement Monster. Measure all of its parts in centimeters. Play Measurement Tag again, but this time use centimeters. If you have received your packet, you may choose to continue to practice measurement by completing My Math book pages 635-708.

1) Kate's garden is 9 meters long. Stella's garden is 954 centimeters long. Whose garden is longer?
2) Brianna's bedroom is 6 meters wide. Oliver's bedroom is 596 centimeters wide. Whose bedroom is wider? 3) Gianna walks 10 meters to her mailbox. Parker walks 757 centimeters to his mailbox. Who walks farther? 4) At the end of the race, Carly was 3 meters ahead of Reagan. How many centimeters was she ahead of Reagan? |
GAME TO PLAY:
Measurement Tag Needed: paper, ruler, different colored pens/markers/colored pencils, 2 dice Basically you grab any rectangular surface, and give each student a ruler and a set of two dice. Students begin in opposite corners. One is “IT” and the other is trying to not get tagged. Every time a student rolls, they combine their dice and that is how many centimeters they can move in any direction. Their lines can cross as many times as needed, but the tagger only succeeds when they “catch” their partner at their latest stopping point. |
Thursday, April 16th1) Open your My Math book to Chapter 11, Lesson 11 on pages 709-714.
2) Watch video lesson by clicking the button to the right. Please pause the video when asked to complete the "On My Own" page. Then start again to correct your work. Make sure you understand any mistakes you made before moving on to the "My Homework" page. Again, pause the video while you complete it. Start video again to correct your work. 3) Write your number, first name, and last name neatly on the top of your "My Homework" page. Write "P-2" or "W-2" in the top right hand corner of your paper. Rip it out carefully and place it in your "Return to School" pocket of your Take-Home Binder. |
