Math
April 6 - 10
Originally, we were planning on our next unit to be Time. Since we are unable to be in the classroom together, we decided to skip to our unit on Measurement instead. Our goal is to give you activities that can easily be done at home with common household items. If you do not have a ruler, tape measure, or other measurement tool to use, this is a site where you can print out a paper one to use. (www.printablerulers.net)
Paper packets will be sent out soon which will contain math book pages. After that, video lessons will be available on this website for each day's assigned lesson. Please be patient with us during this transition into a new way of teaching/learning for all of us. Thank you!

Monday, April 6th1) Watch the video "Measuring Length in Inches" to see how to measure objects with a ruler.
2) Find the household objects on the list. If possible, keep them together for this measurement unit. We will be using these objects several times in the next 2 weeks. 3) Measure each object and record its length to the closest inch. 4) Ask an adult or older student to check your measurement. 5) Keep this paper and items for future lessons. |
|
Gather these household objects to be used during this measurement unit:
fork spoon butter knife scissors book cup candle phone playing card marker shoe water bottle toilet paper roll paper towel roll key |
Tuesday, April 7th1) Watch the videos on "Estimating Length" and "Length Measuring Tools". 2) Use some of the objects from yesterday's list and locate items from today's list (or similar items). 3) Estimate the lengths in either inches, feet, or yards for each item. 4) Then choose the tool that would be best to measure each object. 5) Finally, measure each item using the tool you chose (ruler, yardstick, or measuring tape). 6) Complete Math Packet pages 28-29. |
|
Locate these items:
door chair table television dresser counter stove refrigerator car/vehicle mailbox bed tissue box bike blanket laundry basket |
Wednesday, April 8th1) Watch videos on "Ordering Objects by Length" and "Longer or Shorter Song".
2) Using some of the objects used the past 2 days (4-5 at a time), place them in order from shortest to longest. Repeat this with several groups of items. 3) Choose 2 items to compare. Measure both items using the same units (inches, feet, or yards). Make a statement comparing the 2 items. (ex: The butter knife is 1 inch longer than the spoon.) Repeat this activity with several pairs of items. |

SOMETHING FUN TO DO:
Make a Measurement Monster Use construction paper scraps (or just draw with crayons/markers) to create a monster. See examples below. Then use a ruler to measure in inches: -the height of the monster -the width of the monster -the length of the monster's leg -the length of the monster's foot -the height of the monster's eye -the width of the monster's mouth Keep your monster to use on a project next week. Take a picture of your monster and send it to your teacher. |
Thursday, April 9th1) Watch video "Inches, Feet, & Yards".
2) Remember: 12 inches = 1 foot 3 feet = 1 yard 3) Use items from lists from Monday & Tuesday. Measure items in 2 units (inches & feet or feet & yards). 4) Use logical reasoning to solve word problems under the video. If you haven't yet, make sure
you check out the "SOMETHING FUN TO DO" and the "GAME TO PLAY" in the far right columns of Wednesday & Thursday. |
1) Sam's closet is 4 feet wide, Tom's closet is 50 inches wide. Whose closet is wider?
2) The fence in Laura's backyard is 15 feet long. How many yards long is the fence? 3) Sam planted a tomato plant that is 1 foot tall. The plant grows a little each week. After 4 weeks, would the plant be 10 inches or 14 inches tall? 4) Jane made a paper chain that is 1 yard long. Brad made a paper chain that is 2 feet long. Who made the longer paper chain? 5) Sheradon's scooter is 3 feet long. Sage's scooter is 38 inches long. Whose scooter is longer? |
GAME TO PLAY:
Measurement Tag Needed: paper, ruler, different colored pens/markers/colored pencils, 2 dice Basically you grab any rectangular surface, and give each student a ruler and a set of two dice. Students begin in opposite corners. One is “IT” and the other is trying to not get tagged. Every time a student rolls, they combine their dice and that is how many inches they can move in any direction. Their lines can cross as many times as needed, but the tagger only succeeds when they “catch” their partner at their latest stopping point. |
